Paid traffic is the set of visitors who arrive at your site through paid ads on platforms like Google Ads, Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok Ads, or LinkedIn Ads. Unlike organic traffic (generated by SEO), paid traffic is immediate — it starts coming in as soon as the campaign goes live — but stops when the budget is paused.

What paid traffic is in practice

Paid traffic, also called paid media or sponsored links, is any visit to your site that you paid to obtain. It is the fastest model to generate visibility and results in digital marketing: you set the budget, the audience, and the message, and visitors arrive within hours.

The main platform is Google Ads, which displays ads in Google search results (sponsored links), on the display network (banners on partner sites), and on YouTube. The second largest is Meta Ads, which manages ads on Facebook and Instagram.

Main paid traffic platforms

  • Google Ads — Search: captures those who are actively searching — ideal for existing demand (BOFU)
  • Google Ads — Display: banners on partner sites — ideal for brand awareness and remarketing
  • Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram): targeted by interest and behavior — ideal for creating demand and lead generation
  • LinkedIn Ads: professionals and B2B companies with defined roles and sectors
  • TikTok Ads: young audience (18–35) — ideal for consumer products and e-commerce

Paid traffic vs. organic traffic (SEO)

Paid traffic delivers immediate results, but stops when the budget runs out. SEO takes 4 to 12 months to produce results, but continues generating visits without ongoing cost per click. The most efficient strategy combines both: paid traffic for immediate results while SEO is built. Over time, organic traffic replaces part of the paid traffic, and the total acquisition cost decreases.

When it is worth investing in paid traffic

It is worth it when you need results in weeks, are launching a new product or service, want to test a market before committing to SEO, or want to scale what already works organically. Attention: if the Cost per Acquisition (CPA) exceeds the customer value (LTV), the campaign incurs losses — always monitor the metrics before scaling the investment.
