CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the percentage of people who saw an ad, search result, or link and clicked on it. It is calculated by dividing the number of clicks by the number of impressions and multiplying by 100.

How to calculate CTR

Formula: CTR = (Number of Clicks / Number of Impressions) × 100.

Practical example: A Google Ads campaign displayed the ad 10,000 times and received 350 clicks. CTR = 350 / 10,000 × 100 = 3.5%. An organic result appeared 5,000 times and was clicked 400 times. CTR = 400 / 5,000 × 100 = 8%.

CTR Benchmarks by Channel

CTR varies widely between channels. For Google Ads — Search, the market average is 2–5%, with 5–10% considered good and above 10% excellent. For Meta Ads, the average is 0.5–1.5%, with a good CTR of 1.5–3%. For SEO, position 1 on Google has an average CTR of 28–32%, while position 10 drops to 2–3%.

What Influences CTR

In paid ads: clarity and benefit in the ad title, audience relevance, offer quality, and in Meta Ads, the attractiveness of the visual creative. In SEO: the title tag (descriptive and curiosity-inducing), the meta description (with implicit call-to-action), a clean URL, and the presence of rich snippets like review stars or FAQ — which can increase CTR by up to 30%.

Impact of CTR on Ad Costs

In Google Ads, CTR directly affects the Quality Score, which determines the CPC. Ads with high CTR have a higher Quality Score, pay less per click, and appear in better positions. High CTR → High Quality Score → Lower CPC → More clicks for the same budget.

How to Improve CTR

  • A/B testing of titles — create 2–3 variations and see which converts better
  • Use numbers — “7 steps to…” has a higher CTR than “How to…”
  • Include the main keyword in the title and description (SEO)
  • Add urgency or benefit words — “free,” “now,” “step by step”
  • Enable extensions in Google Ads — sitelinks and calls increase CTR
